Dr. Denis Mukwege, Congolese Nobel Peace Prize laureate, launched his presidential campaign, vowing to address corruption and the ongoing violent conflict in eastern Congo. Speaking to supporters in Bukavu, South Kivu province, the 68-year-old doctor pledged to end famine in the resource-rich yet impoverished nation. Mukwege, honored in 2018 for aiding sexual violence victims through his Panzi Hospital, has survived an assassination attempt in 2012 and received death threats due to his activism. He will compete in the December 20 election against incumbent President Felix Tshisekedi, former oil executive Martin Fayulu, businessman Moise Katumbi, and ex-Prime Minister Matata Ponyo. Mukwege’s first priority, if elected, is to establish a structured, modernized army. Eastern Congo’s conflict, fueled by over 120 groups vying for power and resources, intensified with the resurgence of the M23 rebel group in late 2021. His supporters, like Nabitu Aline, express optimism, viewing Mukwege as a civil society representative and the people’s choice.
