Helsinki Committee in Bulgaria condemns use of firearms against migrants
Euronews met the chairperson of the Bulgarian Helsinki Committee, Krassimir Kanev, in Sofia. The human rights organisation documented 5000 cases of “pushbacks”, last year, but the real figures could be much higher: Migrants who have entered Bulgaria through Turkey without papers, are pushed back by Bulgarian border guards to Turkish territory, without giving them the opportunity to ask for asylum in the EU, Kanev says. The Helsinki Committee criticises the use of violence against migrants in Bulgaria, such as hate speech and beatings. “We had even cases where after the use of firearms, people lost their lives. This should be investigated and prosecuted! This should never happen!”
