Rafah, a town in southern Gaza, is overwhelmed by thousands of families fleeing Israel’s intensified bombardment in central Gaza and Khan Younis. Displaced people, carrying minimal belongings, find the already full shelters cannot accommodate them, leading many to erect tents and makeshift shelters by roadsides and near medical facilities, hoping for safety. The United Nations reports that around 100,000 people have recently arrived in Rafah, exacerbating the overcrowding in one of Gaza’s most densely populated areas. Israel’s aggressive campaign against Hamas has displaced approximately 85% of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents and has resulted in over 21,500 deaths, predominantly women and children. This has precipitated a dire humanitarian crisis, with a significant portion of the population facing starvation. The Health Ministry in Hamas-controlled Gaza, which does not differentiate between civilian and combatant casualties, has announced these figures. Despite international calls for a ceasefire, Israeli officials persist, asserting that stopping now would concede victory to Hamas, which is recognized as a terrorist organization by several countries, including Israel. Israel is also committed to rescuing over 100 hostages held by militants since their October 7 attack, which initiated the conflict and resulted in around 1,200 deaths, mostly among civilians.
