The US Coast Guard confirmed that one person has been found dead in a press conference in Miami Beach on Wednesday. The announcement came after a boat capsized off the Florida coast.
The US Coast Guard are continuing rescue efforts to locate the remaining missing people. A survivor has also been found, according to Captain Jo- Ann Burdain, who confirmed that 39 other people were on board the vessel when it capsized. The reason for the incident was the severe weather in the area.
The survivor was reportedly found clinging onto a hull of a boat in the sea. The Coast Guard is continuing to search for other survivors, in what is suspected to have been a failed human trafficking attempt.
SOT, Jo-Ann Burdain, Captain of the US Coast Guard: “Yesterday, at about 8:00 in the morning, a commercial mariner notified the Sector Miami Command Center that they had located a capsized twenty five foot vessel about 40 miles east of Fort Pierce, Florida.”
SOT, Jo-Ann Burdain, Captain of the US Coast Guard: “That Good Samaritan, again, who is a commercial tug and barge, stopped in and rescued a person off of the hull of that vessel and kept him on board while he waited for a Coast Guard vessel who retrieved the person and transferred them ashore for medical care.”
SOT, Jo-Ann Burdain, Captain of the US Coast Guard: “The survivor reported leaving Bimini Saturday evening with 39 other people on board the vessel. The vessel capsized shortly after they departed due to severe weather in the area. The survivor was not wearing a life jacket and reported that no one else on board was wearing a life jacket.”
SOT, Captain Jo-Ann Burdain, Member of the US Coast Guard: “We did recover, one deceased body, it will be transferred to shore today in Fort Pierce, and we continue to search for other survivors.”
