U.S. announces new $2.5 billion security aid package for Ukraine

The Biden administration has announced a new security aid package for Ukraine.
However, it did not include the heavy tanks that Ukraine has asked for.
Ahead of the announcement, a number of European countries also pledged further military support for Ukraine.
Shin Ha-young has the details.

The Pentagon on Thursday announced a new Ukraine security package worth 2-point-5 billion U.S. dollars.
According to the U.S. Department of Defense, the aid includes 90 Stryker armored personnel carriers, 59 Bradley Fighting Vehicles, and 53 Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles, or MRAPS.
It also includes ammunition for the HIMARS rocket system.
It’s the second largest military support package from the Biden administration and follows a package earlier this month worth 3-point-8 billion dollars.
However, the U.S. did not provide the M1 Abrams tanks that Ukraine has repeatedly asked for.
In a briefing on Thursday, the Pentagon’s Deputy Press Secretary Sabrina Singh said it doesn’t make sense to provide Abrams tanks to Ukraine at this moment.
Her remarks came after German officials said they will not provide tanks to Ukraine until Washington decides to do so.
Singh, however, said the kinds of security assistance that Germany provides is a sovereign decision for Germany.
Meanwhile, several other European countries pledged further military aid to Ukraine.
The UK promised to send 600 Brimstone missiles, while Denmark pledged 19 French-made Caesar howitzers.
On Friday, Finland promised more than 400 million euros worth of defence equipment.
Further details are expected after the Western allies’ defense ministers meet on Friday at Ramstein Air Base in Germany.
Meanwhile, the Washington Post, citing unnamed U.S. and Ukrainian sources, reports that U.S. Central Intelligence Agency Director William Burns met with Ukraine’s President Zelenskyy in Kyiv last week and briefed Zelenskyy on what the CIA sees Russia planning for the battlefield this spring.
The American official did not disclose the details of the meeting to the Post, but said the U.S. side reinforced its continued support for Ukraine.
