Chancellor Merkel described the current pandemic situation in Germany as dramatic in her address to the Cities’ Association on Wednesday in Erfurt.

“The current pandemic situation in Germany is dramatic. I can’t say it any other way. The fourth wave is hitting our country with full force,” she said in her online speech.

“And even if there is no longer a legal majority for the continuation of the state of emergency of national scope, there can be no doubt for me that we are in the middle of such an emergency,” she added.

It is of the utmost importance that Federal and state governments meet tomorrow to make decisions, according to Merkel.

The Chancellor warned explicitly about the effects of the fourth COVID wave and called for concrete measures to contain it, such as the introduction of booster shots and the continuation of vaccinations against the virus.

On Thursday, the heads of the federal government and states will meet at a new Corona summit to discuss further strategies regarding the pandemic situation in Germany. A general vaccination mandate is among one of the topics.

SOUNDBITES:

SOT, Angela Merkel, German chancellor (German): “The current pandemic situation in Germany is dramatic. I can’t say it any other way. The fourth wave is hitting our country with full force. And even if there is no longer a legal majority for the continuation of the state of emergency of national scope, there can be no doubt for me that we are in the middle of such an emergency. The number of new COVID infections every day is higher than ever before in the pandemic and the number of corona patients in the intensive care unit is also rising steeply. And the daily death toll is also terrifying.” *NO CUTAWAYS AT SOURCE*

SOT, Angela Merkel, German chancellor (German): “And that is why it is of the utmost importance that the heads of the federal and state governments meet tomorrow for a conference. I say finally, because the meeting is overdue. And to put it bluntly, the virus doesn’t care at all whether Germany is currently in a phase with an executive federal government, which I lead, and negotiations about the formation of a new federal government. The virus doesn’t care at all who moves how far from which political starting point.” *NO CUTAWAYS AT SOURCE*

SOT, Angela Merkel, German chancellor (German): “Firstly, the Federal Government and the states must agree on a threshold value for the so-called hospitalisation index, that means the index that indicates the seriousness of the situation in the hospitals, above which additional steps to contain the pandemic must be taken on a binding basis in accordance with the regional infection situation. A hospitalisation index without a threshold would remain a toothless tiger. Why do we need such a thing? Because without such a threshold, we risk acting too late. However, it would be a disaster to act only when the intensive care units are full. Because then it would be too late.” *NO CUTAWAYS AT SOURCE*

SOT, Angela Merkel, German chancellor (German): “Secondly, we urgently need to make progress on vaccination. And so, I would also like to take this opportunity to promote vaccination. It’s also not too late now at all to decide to get vaccinated for the first time. Because everyone who gets vaccinated protects themselves and others. And if enough people get vaccinated, that’s the way out of the pandemic.” *NO CUTAWAYS AT SOURCE*

SOT, Angela Merkel, German chancellor (German): “And thirdly, we also need a national effort with the booster vaccinations. They are of utmost importance, because according to all scientific findings, nationally as well as internationally, the vaccination protection decreases significantly after six months at the latest. And Israel is showing us how to break the fourth wave with booster vaccinations.” *NO CUTAWAYS AT SOURCE*
