26 FDNY firehouses appeared shut over the weekend, ahead of NYC’s vaccine mandate for city workers coming into effect.
Mayor Bill de Blasio set the deadline for all government employees to get vaccinated against COVID-19 for October 29.
Those who did not apply for exemption but also haven’t received at least one jab, can expect to be put on unpaid leave as of today.
The mandate seemed to cause an uptick in inoculations, but around 2,000 workers have gone on medical leave – significantly more than normal FDNY officials say.
FDNY union officials have warned of slowed emergency response times amid the standoff between the city and vaccine-resistant firefighters.
