LIVE: UN Security Council discusses situation in Libya

The UN Security Council gathers to discuss the situation in Libya on Tuesday, November 23, one month before Libya’s presidential elections.

The Secretary-General’s Special Envoy on Libya and head of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Jan Kubis, is expected to brief the Council on recent developments regarding the country, which is expected to elect a new president on December 24.

Earlier this month, Saif al-Islam Qaddafi, son of deposed Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi, confirmed that he is to run for presidency. The Military Prosecutor has asked the High National Electoral Commission (HNEC) to stop the candidate nominations of Qaddafi and military commander Khalifa Haftar until they complete the investigation of the alleged charges of crimes against humanity brought against them.
