On Wednesday, January 5, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev announced his acceptance of the cabinet’s resignation and ordered the interim government to regain control of oil prices. Tokayev also announce a state of emergency in Almaty and the western Mangistau province with a nighttime curfew and ban on mass gatherings.
Protests, triggered by the rise in oil prices, erupted in Zhanazoen on January 2 and quickly spread across the country, in some places leading to clashes with police.
