Passengers at Haneda Airport in Tokyo reacted on Tuesday as the Japanese government closed borders to all non-residents in response to the spread of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus.
“I’ve lived in Japan for two years, since COVID started I think Japan has been by far the strictest country when it comes to COVID-19 and the ban of foreigners further explains how strict Japan has been with COVID-19,” a passenger said.
“I think there is no choice but to restrict entry. Checks at the time of entry are strict, but forced quarantine is too short. After three days of quarantine, infected people will spread the new strain of the coronavirus,” another traveller said.
The new restriction is set to be in place until December 31 as Japan became the second country after Israel to close its borders over Omicron fears.

SOT, Passenger: “I’ve lived in Japan for two years, since COVID started I think Japan has been by far the strictest country when it comes to COVID-19 and the ban of foreigners further explains how strict Japan has been with COVID-19 in general. I know the USA only requires a COVID-19 negative test within the last 72h for people who travel into the USA, so I think Japan should head towards something like that. As long as you test negative for COVID-19, I think they should allow foreign travellers into the country.”

SOT, Passenger (Japanese): “I think there is no choice but to restrict entry. Checks at the time of entry are strict, but forced quarantine is too short. After three days of quarantine, infected people will spread the new strain of the coronavirus.”

SOT, Passenger: “I think that each country needs to do what they have to do to keep themselves safe.”

SOT, Passenger returning from Turkey (Japanese): “I haven’t been to Japan for a long time, so I have no right to judge, but compared to foreign countries, there are too few COVID-19 tests in Japan, and Japan is late with the introduction of the vaccination passport. Full digitalization has been introduced in the country where I now live. All data is synchronised. In comparison with Turkey, Japan has lagged behind and does everything the old-fashioned way on paper.”
