German Chancellor Angela Merkel visited the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial in Jerusalem on Sunday along with Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett.
Merkel laid a wreath in honour of the Jewish victims of the National-Socialistic regime and ignited a symbolic fire.
“The crimes against the Jewish people documented here are for us German people always an everlasting responsibility and reminder. The fact that the Jewish life could find a new home in Germany after the crimes of the Shoah, is an invaluable sign of trust, for which we are thankful. This trust prompts us to go against anti-Semitism, hate, and violence, on a daily basis. This is a commitment for every [German] government,” Merkel said.
Before this event, the chancellor had paid a visit to president Isaac Herzog. She will also receive an honorary doctor title at the Technion Institute of Technology in Haifa.
This is Angela Merkel’s final trip to Israel as Chancellor of Germany before the end of her nearly 16 years in office.

SOT, Angela Merkel, German Chancellor (German): “Every visit to Yad Vashem touches me again deep in my soul. The crimes against the Jewish people documented here are for us German people always an everlasting responsibility and reminder. The fact that the Jewish life could find a new home in Germany after the crimes of the Shoah, is an invaluable sign of trust, for which we are thankful. This trust prompts us to go against anti-Semitism, hate, and violence on a daily basis. This is a commitment for every [German] government.”

SOT, Naftali Bennett (Hebrew): “The goal of the Nazi regime was to leave wilderance after them, the total erasure of our people. A third of the Jewish people are gone. 6 million men, women, and children.

SOT, Naftali Bennett (Hebrew): “Decades after, the Jewish people didn’t yet finish to understand the disaster. In my eyes, the most important lesson is the obvious one: the place of the Jewish people is on their land.”

SOT, Naftali Bennett (Hebrew): “The holocaust is not the reason for the formation of the Jewish state. Our relations with this country did not start at Auschwitz. But our brothers and sisters that were lost there strengthen our will, never again to be defenseless people away from their country.”
