Iraqi Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Ahmed Al-Sahaf announced on Sunday that the Iraqi government is planning to organise extraordinary flights to voluntarily return migrants stranded at the Belarusian-Polish border.

“All the measures we rely on are to enhance the path of the voluntary return of Iraqi migrants and refugees during the next two or three days, God willing, there will be an urgent and exceptional trip. The Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in Moscow called for this, through its official website, and deposited phone numbers through which anyone wishing to register on this flight could be coordinated,” the spokesperson said.

The decision comes after the ministry announced the suspension of direct flights between Iraq and Belarus and the temporary withdrawal of the work permit of the Belarusian consul in Baghdad.

Al-Sahhaf explained that the Iraqi embassies in Moscow and Poland will give the migrants passports in case they lose them during their journey.

Tensions between the EU and Belarus have been escalating in recent months, with the EU accusing Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko of deliberately sending migrants to the border in response to sanctions imposed by the EU.

SOT, Ahmed Al-Sahhaf, Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson (Arabic): “The Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs worked to devote the voluntary return of Iraqi immigrants, and there are political and diplomatic dialogues now taking place with Iraq’s partners and friends in the European Union. We are coordinating nationally with the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Migration and Displacement, to support the voluntary return by urgently conducting emergency evacuation flights.”

SOT, Ahmed Al-Sahhaf, Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson (Arabic): “The embassies of the Republic of Iraq in Moscow and Poland are working permanently and diligently to announce an exceptional trip taking place. We also grant transit passports to everyone who has lost his passport for any reason.”

SOT, Ahmed Al-Sahhaf, Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson (Arabic): “According to this, we will complete the steps successively. Our goal is to perpetuate the principles of human rights, the commitment to voluntary return, as well as the availability of procedures that do not prejudice Iraq’s reputation and preserve its partnership with all its friends and partners. We are practically not talking about a diplomatic crisis; we are talking about procedural rules related to the security and safety of travellers. Accordingly, the Iraqi government is dependent on any measure that enhances the safety and security of its members at home and abroad.”

SOT, Abdullah Khaled, Director of Traveling office in Baghdad (Arabic): “Because of some travellers arriving in Belarus, and via Belarus going to other countries, the Civil Aviation Authority announced the suspension of national transportation in Baghdad and the suspension of flights (to Belarus).”

SOT, Abdullah Khaled, Director of Traveling office in Baghdad (Arabic): “The approvals and visas were obtained through Turkey because in Baghdad there is no Belarusian embassy. Through Turkey, we obtain visas and security approvals for citizens to enter Belarusian territory.”

SOT, Abdullah Khaled, Director of Traveling office in Baghdad (Arabic): “Currently, there are no flights to Belarus, due to the lack of obtaining a visa and the difficulty of flying. The Civil Aviation Authority announced the suspension of the national carrier from Baghdad to Belarus, and the rest of the international airports cancelled flights by transit from Baghdad to Belarus via the Emirates or via Other countries in general, because of the situation, that is, they went to Belarus and did not return to Iraq.”

SOT, Abdullah Khaled, Director of Traveling office in Baghdad (Arabic): “Previously, we did not witness this case, it appeared recently, of course, and because of it, flying and obtaining a visa became very difficult, and flights stopped in general, from about six months ago.”
