Laurent le Conquerant, literally ‘Laurent the Conqueror’ in French has been setting up chess boards in Flagey square in Brussels’ Ixelles for anyone who wants to come and play with the homeless chess enthusiasts.

“I came out of jail. I decided to take back my liberty under my terms. I have 5 diplomas and 2 Law licenses. I gave everything up for sharing chess for people in need, people with no legal documents, people going through misery when they haven’t asked for anything,” claimed Laurent who was challenging his opponents on Saturday.
People can come to play for free and Laurent sometimes receives cash and food donations which he distributes to people in need.

SOT, Laurent le Conquerant (French): “It’s a story that goes back to 17 years ago. I came out of jail. I decided to take back my liberty under my terms. I have 5 diplomas and 2 Law licenses. I gave everything up for sharing chess for people in need, people with no legal documents, people going through misery when they haven’t asked for anything.”

SOT, Laurent le Conquerant (French): “The first time I was just playing and I was there with my chess board. Someone was waiting at the bus stop and came up to me with a 10 euro bill and I said no it’s not for sale and he said it’s just to play. I said it’s free come and play!”

SOT, Laurent le Conquerant (French): “I am not conscious of what it brings people. Yes I hear people talking and they say it’s like a bubble of oxygen in their day, in their life.”
