A suspected armed teenager triggered a large-scale police operation at the Otto-Hahn school in the district of Jenfeld in Hamburg on Tuesday.
According to initial information provided by a witness, the police had assumed that a teenager allegedly armed with a firearm could have entered the school grounds. As a result, the area was cordoned off, and the building and grounds were extensively searched by Special Operations Units (SEK).
“It was about 11:45 am (10:45 GMT) when a witness called the police. He had seen two young men here at the Jenfelder avenue, and they were crossing the street. And one of them then pulled what at least looked like a gun out of the backpack. He also moved in a way that looked like he was loading a gun,” said Police spokesperson Levgrun.
The police took the witness’s call seriously and ordered an extensive search of about seven buildings and fifty-three school classes. At least fifty police vehicles and fire and rescue services were deployed at the scene.
Parents were called to pick up their children but had to wait at a gathering point until the search was over to be reunited with them.
The police have since given the all-clear.
W/S Police speaking to parents through megaphone (German): ‘We will bring you and your children back together. This will all end well. But it might take a little longer because there are many rooms and many buildings’
SOT, Levgrun, Police spokesperson (German): “It was about 11:45 am when a witness called the police. He had seen two young men here at the Jenfelder avenue, they were crossing the street. And one of them then pulled what at least looked like a gun out of the backpack. He also moved in a way that looked like he was loading a gun. That seemed a bit suspicious to the witness since the two went onto the school grounds. Of course that evokes certain associations. The witness then called the police and we took that seriously and wanted to rule out that there was a threatening situation. And therefore the whole school building was searched.”
SOT, Levgrun, Police spokesperson (German): “The search just ended. It took a long time as we are dealing with a huge school campus. There are at least seven buildings and fifty-three school classes. One can imagine that this can’t be done quickly. As a result, we didn’t find anyone who matched the description. At least to this point. We also didn’t find anyone with a firearm.”
