A fire broke out in the early hours of the morning in a COVID-19 ward, killing three, at the Hadji Dimitar hospital in Sliven on Sunday.
The blaze occurred in a room on the fourth floor where four patients were being treated. Two died on the scene and a third died after being transported to an emergency hospital to receive treatment for severe burns.
Bulgaria’s health system is under pressure as new cases of COVID are rising. On Sunday the country reported 8,178 patients in COVID wards with 745 of them in intensive care.
Bulgaria is also the least vaccinated nation in the European Union with less than a third of adults fully vaccinated.
