US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced that the United States remains committed to defending NATO, Taiwan, and the European Union after a meeting of NATO Defense Ministers in Brussels on Friday.
The Pentagon chief also sidestepped questions about US protection for Taiwan, stressing that America will maintain its ‘One China’ policy.
“As we have done over multiple administrations, we will continue to help Taiwan with the source of capabilities that it needs to defend itself, and we will stay focussed on these things,” Austin said.
Austin’s statement comes after US President Biden sparked controversy on Thursday by affirming that the United States had an agreement to help defend Taiwan.
Regarding Russia, Austin said the Biden Administration wanted ‘predictability and stability’ in its relationship with the country.
