Melbourne’s sixth lockdown and curfew were removed last night at 23:59 local time (12:59 GMT) after the city met its target of fully vaccinating 70 percent of the population.
People took to the streets of St Kilda, an inner seaside suburb in Melbourne, flooding cafes, restaurants and bars to celebrate as Melbourne residents were allowed to move freely for the first time in months. Hospitality venues, hairdressers and beauty services were allowed to open to 20 fully vaccinated people indoors and 50 outdoors. Local merchants expressed positivity about the upcoming year following a year of social distancing, stating: ‘I feel like next year, next year will be alot more promising.”
Premier Daniel Andrews will announce more freedoms in the coming days as the state of Victoria is set to reach 80 percent vaccination within two weeks. More restrictions are expected to be eased such as retail opening and community sport returning in some form.
Melbourne has spent almost 300 days in lockdown since the pandemic began claiming the title of the most locked down city in the world.
