Hundreds of protesters and supporters of former Albanian prime minister and president, Sali Berisha, raided the offices of the centre-right Democratic Party of Albania in Tirana on Saturday.
Protesters attempted to break their way into the building with tools while its occupants fought back with the help of a fire extinguisher, before entry points were eventually forced and the premises stormed.
Police responded to the incident by sending officers in riot gear and deploying tear gas, pepper spray and a water cannon against the protesters.
An internal power struggle in the country’s main opposition party has caused tensions to escalate, resulting in the raiding of the building.
Berisha, a co-founder of the Democratic Party, has recently made a comeback in an attempt to reclaim the leadership role within the party, a role currently officially held by former Tirana mayor Lulzim Basha.
In May 2021, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced a set of sanctions on Berisha for “corrupt acts” that “undermined democracy in Albania.”
According to the Police, at least one person was injured in the incident.
